 ""Some Like it Hot"" 2009-07-08

Is is possible to love an iron? I received this iron 5 days ago. I am using it for quilting & I love the steam feature. My quilting teacher recommended it. I have to admit, I had never heard of Rowenta irons!! I was hesitant because of a lot of negative reviews here. Especially regarding "leaking water". But reading the product instructions is CRITICAL to correct operation. It does not use 100% distilled water! I am using spring water to prevent dripping. So far, so good.

I actually enjoy ironing & with this baby it is a breeze. Nice movement, large water reservoir, no auto shut-off, long cord, etc. Someone stated that the temperature dial is a bit awkward which I agree with. But in the grand scheme of things this is a minor issue.

NB I paid $94.99 3 weeks ago & now Amazon is selling it for $76.99 from a different vendor! No fair. :-(

"Rowenta used to be great.. but this is a HORRIBLE iron" 2009-06-30
By P. MCGARRY (Arlington, VA)
I've used Rowenta irons for years. In January 2009 it was time for a new iron, and I bought this DX8900 professional iron. I really wish I hadn't - and too bad I already disposed of my old iron.

This Rowenta iron leaks SEVERELY from the base in the upright position after just a few months of use. The last two times I've used it, it has been almost unbearable. I've had to let it lie flat on my board in order to get any kind of use out if at all without it inundating my clothes with water after tilting it from the base to the ironing position. From what I have seen in a few other reviews, this is happening to other people as well, and even after replacements and "repairs".

I will not be buying another Rowenta iron anytime soon.. and am now about to search Amazon for a quality iron from another vendor that doesn't leak all over everything! Seriously, it was leaking puddles! I never thought I would ever write a horrible review for a Rowenta iron, but this one is just plain HORRIBLE. And for the price and the 'professional' labeling and the Rowenta name, that is simply unacceptable.

 "Rowenta DX8900 wonder" 2009-06-04
By G. C. Harris (Idaho)
I purchased this iron because I wanted one that would iron my sewing projects and also the few clothes that wrinkle like mad. It's a wonder, light, easy to use, easy to fill, and the wrinkles are gone. Too bad one can't use it on one's skin. But it's great for all my projects. Easy to lift too. And you decide when it's time for it to turn off. Nice!!!

Crazy for Quilts: A Celebration of the Quilter's Art (Town Square Giftbook Series)Art Quilts: A Celebration: 400 Stunning Contemporary DesignsMasters: Art Quilts: Major Works by Leading Artists (The Masters)I was disappointed at first and I am still adjusting to this iron. I love the non auto shut off - been waiting a long time for a major company to come out with this feature. The water container is huge and fabulous. You MUST follow the directions precisely to have the iron work correctly. It steams beautifully but you must be careful of sticky stuff on the sole plate so keep the cleaner they recommend on hand and a cloth to wipe the sole plate clean now and again. I'd probably give it a 5 if it weren't for this problem.

"Good, with a few caveats" 2009-04-09
By JMD (Renton, WA United States)
My Black & Decker Classic died, and when I went to replace it, I saw this Rowenta with no auto shutoff (my primary requirement) plus features the Classic lacked, so I decided to try it.

The balance and heft are different from the Classic, so I'm still getting used to that part. It steams better than the Classic, and it has steam bursts which I've always wanted so I really like that aspect. It presses better than my old iron.

What I don't like: it has a single light, which is only on while it's heating (it goes off when it reaches the proper temperature). I can't glance over at the iron and tell if it's on or not. The temperature dial is under the handle, so I have to peer from the side to see where it's set. And the round dial takes more therbligs than my old iron which used a lever.

I think I'll be happy with this iron, but I think it could be a bit better with an On light and a more user-friendly temp control.
