Customer Buzz
"If I could give this zero stars, I would" 2009-01-31
By Diane C (Central Texas)
I purchased this iron for $150.00 (not including tax, shipping & handling). Within 6 months, I ended up sending it in for repairs twice. Both times the costs of sending it to their warranty repair center was at my expense ($12.00 by traceable delivery x 2). The repairs were 2 months apart.

The first time I sent it in, it was because it stopped steaming, but leaked water out of every hole on the soleplate. The second time was because it would not heat even though the lights were on (it seemed to be stuck in auto-shut off). Each time I sent it away, 4 weeks passed.

Yes folks, this means that after I got it back "repaired" the first time, it crapped out again after a month - but for a different problem.

Then there was the third time. This time it was because an electrical problem (the cord got VERY HOT, and it began to smell like something was burning). Rowenta decided to send me a new iron, but only if I would return the one I had repaired three times back to them. Yes, it was at their expense because I pitched a fit and fought for it. They reluctantly sent me a prepaid UPS label. At the time, I had owned the iron for 11 months.

Here's the catch: the warranty on the new iron is only good from the date I purchased the old one. In other words, it's a new iron but has no warranty left.

With this new iron, I did not use tap water as suggested in the user's guide because I was advised by Rowenta that, while it is what they generally recommend, tap water in some areas is too hard and causes leaking. Rowenta told me to use bottled spring water (not purified or distilled). That is exactly what I did. Lo and behold, six months later, the replacement began to leak, AND stopped heating at the same time. In the end, this iron cost me about $190.

I do know my way around an iron. Aside from clothing, I also quilt. Rowenta is a favored brand, but I will never buy another. I had the "Rowenta Professional" before this one, and it died after just nine months. Follow the recommendations of people who have had their irons for a period of time who can write a tried and true review, and not those who are thrilled in the 'honeymoon' phase of the product. It truly is a GREAT iron, but only for about five months. Choose wisely; this brand fails miserably and so does their customer service.

PS - I won't even go into the quality of service and follow up you get from the people who do Rowenta's warranty repairs out of New York.

MacKayla Lane’s life is good. She has great friends, a decent job, and a car that breaks down only every other week or so. In other words, she’s your perfectly ordinary twenty-first-century woman. Or so she thinks…until something extraordinary happens.

When her sister is murdered, leaving a single clue to her death–a cryptic message on Mac’s cell phone–Mac journeys to Ireland in search of answers. The quest to find her sister’s killer draws her into a shadowy realm where nothing is as it seems, where good and evil wear the same treacherously seductive mask. She is soon faced with an even greater challenge: staying alive long enough to learn how to handle a power she had no idea she possessed–a gift that allows her to see beyond the world of man, into the dangerous realm of the Fae….

As Mac delves deeper into the mystery of her sister’s death, her every move is shadowed by the dark, mysterious Jericho, a man with no past and only mockery for a future. As she begins to close in on the truth, the ruthless Vlane–an alpha Fae who makes sex an addiction for human women–closes in on her. And as the boundary between worlds begins to crumble, Mac’s true mission becomes clear: find the elusive Sinsar Dubh before someone else claims the all-powerful Dark Book–because whoever gets to it first holds nothing less than complete control of the very fabric of both worlds in their hands….

 "I loved this book" 2009-07-29
By Joanne Harris (GA USA)
This book is full of fun. The characters are slow to develop, bu they do eventually. I was drawn into this book, and could not put it down. Great description, creative world, good characters and I love a cliff hanger! Fun, and right now it is free for Kindle.

 "just HORRIBLE!" 2009-07-28
By jfp
I loved Ms. Moning's Highlander series and was really excited to read this new book (even though I was disappointed she had decided to start a new series rather than continue with the Highlander books). This book was terrible- Mac is annoying and Barrons does nothing for me. I can't believe this is part of a 5 book series- I will not be reading any more. Hopefully after she finishes this series, Ms. Moning will write more books like the Highlander series.

"Quick, fun and absorbing read" 2009-07-26
By Willow Brook
This was a freebie for the Kindle. Otherwise I probably wouldn't have read it. Urban Fantasy is not really my favorite genre. Also, somehow I've managed not to read any of Moning's books. So given all that, Darkfever was a wonderful surprise. The story sucked me right in and was a quick, fun, interesting read. The young (only 22), humorous, and determined heroine, Mac journeys into the dangerous and bewildering world of Fae who are starting to take over Dublin. In an effort to discover who murdered her much loved sister, Mac teams up with the mysterious, not very nice but full of valuable information (which he may or may not share with the poor girl) Jericho Barrons. Mac struggles with whether she can trust Jericho who doesn't go out of his way to reassure her. Nonetheless, he is her best bet for survival and finding her sister's murderer. Meanwhile, Mac's newly discovered psychic skills are extremely useful to Jericho.

Moning does a great job of creating the creepy, frightening Fae and the powers they have over humans. Mac is a well-rounded character who comes into her own under enormous pressure and danger. Jericho is an intriguing hero who keeps Mac and the reader guessing as far as his motivations, ambitions and abilities.

I have only one quibble. I started to get annoyed by the frequent portentous comments such as "I didn't realize then but..." "I later came to see..." "If only I had know how true his warning was." But the ominous references to future events also fit in the 1st person narrative and the unfolding story, so it really is a small quibble.

All in all, this free 1st book has drawn me into the series as well as introduced me to a talented author to read. I give it a solid 4 or even 4 1/2 stars for being such an absorbing read

 "Bimbo in the underworld" 2009-07-26
By Gina K (PA, USA)
To add to what others have said, the story concept is intriguing, but the heroine, Mac, is not. Mac is a twenty-something, but a mental and emotional pre-teen. Starting as a mystery, the story quickly evolves into a horror fest with erotic twists. Mac goes to Ireland to push the investigation surrounding her sister's death, since it seems to have burned out. Then, like Alice, she falls down the rabbit hole by taking a wrong turn in Dublin to enter an underworld where a battle between evil and not-so-evil? is taking place. She discovers she has special powers, can not figure out who the good and bad guys really are, and, as others have said enters a strained relationship with Barrons, some kind of dark prince. There is a lot of ambiguity in the story and characters, with no clear ending. Mac does seem to mature a bit toward the end, thank God, or I would have had to stop reading the book. Overall, the novelty of the story and descriptions of fae kept me interested to finish the book and even read the follow up story, where hopefully our heroine will act her age.

"Nothing More Than A Commercial" 2009-07-25
By Stefanie Outram
This is a thinly veiled commercial for the upcoming series.

The writing isn't bad, but the author makes no attempt to explain anything. I had a hard time believing the main character's screaming fits. If you can get past that, you'll find more questions than answers. Very irritating. I am just glad that I didn't pay for this. I will not be reading the next book in the series.

 "fantastic, but too short" 2009-07-22
By Phyllis W. Parker (NJ USA)
Loved this book. It was so well written. I actually could not put the book down. I got to the end of it and was shocked not to find answers to the diagnosis plaguing the young women. What did the doctor determine about her mental and physical stability? I found just too many what happens next.My Soul to Lose

"HQN has a teen series" 2009-07-21
By Tracy Karol (Texas)
I never knew Harlequin had a teen series. Maybe it's new. In any case, I found this author's writing to be really good and wasn't disappointed that the book was so short, considering it's a prequel for her series. Plus, the book was free on my Kindle and I read it in one sitting. Even though it was meant for teens, I'll read the sequel myself and recommend it for my daughters. It had me hooked. Hey, a ton of people read Twilight, too!

 "Didn't Give Enough" 2009-07-20

My Soul To Lose would have gotten a better rating from me, if A. the book actually answered some of the general readers' questions, and B. Didn't make the attempt at sucking you in with a cliffhanger. The plot has great potential for the series, and the writing was well done in my opinion. Also, I thought the characters were realistic and down-to-earth. However, I don't think it's worth buying the other books in the series, and I kind of found it irritating that the author left you with no answer, and a cliffhanger that went "Will she ever find out what's happening to her? Find out in ___!" I do suggest reading it, since it's a kindle freebie, but as for the rest of the books in the series, your time is better spent checking them out from a library.

 "4 stars" 2009-07-30
By Nicholas Cordova
Paranoia by Joseph Finder is very plot driven, and I agree with oso diablo that the writing style itself was lacking. It was truthfully hard to creep through the first 20 chapters. And, there were points, being a computer geek myself, where I was screaming, "You don't need an effing keylogger, if you have physical access to the computer."

But by the end, I was jumping out of my seat. Thinking, I want to read more. I completely love Adam Cassidy and hope to see the character again someday.

 "Free download, great read" 2009-07-29

I got this book free as a Kindle download, and it turned out to be one of the best books I've read in a long time. Great for vacation reading or travel. I couldn't stop reading, and there were many surprising twists. I will definitely read more of this author.

 "A good story line" 2009-07-27
By Steve Birchfield (Tampa, FL)
I decided to try Paranoia since it was a free download and wanted something to start reading on the Kindle. I immediately was hooked on it and found myself unable to put it down. His details in describing people and places made me feel like I was part of the main character's (Adam) world. I was disappointed with the use of language which didn't add anything to the story or realism. In fact, at times it even took away from the story. Otherwise, it was a good story line and suspenseful. I was disappointed with the ending. After the great story line and build up the ending let me down.

I am willing to try one of Finder's other books if they are written in the same suspenseful manner. I liked his use of fictitious and real companies and their products. I would hope that they aren't written with all of the language to try and shock the reader or create some sort of realism.

 "Great read!" 2009-07-26
By Leeanne Bergquist (Virginia)
This book was easy to read, hard to put down. No mind-blowing plots, no magical characters that you have to learn the terminology for, just a good story. This book reads like a screenplay, it would make for a great movie thriller. 4 stars instead of 5, because the last couple of pages were a little weak (kind of like Grisham's The Firm.) Enjoy!
